MAINTENANCE WORKER

Classification: Skilled Support

Minimum Qualifications: 


· a diploma or certificate from a recognized trade school 
· property management experience is an asset
· registration with the appropriate professional association of their area of child-care and other qualifications
· ongoing development of knowledge and skills
· training on an annual basis to meet or exceed the standards of their professional association
· the minimum requirements of the Province of Nova Scotia, Department of Community
  Services, Provincial Standards for Residential Child-Caring Facilities; Children and Family Services Act
  and Regulations; 


POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and the day-to-day supervision of the Facility Supervisor or
the Executive Director, the position incumbent is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of all
Association buildings. The incumbent shall have a genuine concern for youth and their families and an
appreciation of the issues they face and be familiar with and have an understanding of the goals and objectives
of the Association.


ACCOUNTABILITY:

The incumbent is accountable to all standards and expectations of the Province of Nova Scotia:
· Provincial Standards for Residential Child-Caring Facilities
· Children and Family Services Act
· Nova Scotia Child Abuse Protocol
· ADCRF Code of Conduct
· Code of Conduct or Ethics of their Professional Association

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In all duties and responsibilities and any delegation of tasks, the incumbent is responsible to ensure that all
matters under the Provincial Standards for Residential Child-Caring Facilities, the Children and Family Services
Act and Regulations and other legislation related to children and youth, which fall under his/her responsibilities
are routinely reviewed and that the Standards are met or exceeded. All programs and initiatives must be
consistent with the philosophy of the Association.

The Maintenance Worker is based out of the Hawthorne House but may be required to travel to any of the
ADCRF facilities

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for:

· all appropriate standards of safety for himself or herself , all staff and residents of and visitors to the facilities
· supervising staff or residents assigned to Maintenance duty
· reporting on the condition of all aspects of the physical facility
· maintaining inventory of supplies and tools and maintain in good working order
· ordering and delivery or pick up of supplies and obtaining estimates for all work to be
  performed 
· emergency, on call service
· assisting in assessing and estimating costs for maintenance needs for the upcoming budget year
· repair or arranging for the repair by qualified personnel of plumbing problems (minor or major), electrical
  problems and drywall repairs
· completion of any required interior or exterior painting 
· removal of snow in winter conditions and the cutting and maintenance of grass and
  gardens and yard work in spring, summer and fall
· upkeep of  the alarm system such that it is fully operational at all times, and arrange, as necessary, for
  immediate repair 
· regular testing and checking of fire extinguishers
· repairing or arranging for repair of any appliance as required
· retention and maintenance of his or her own tools and for ensuring that tools that could be
  used to inflict harm or injury to self or others are not in the possession of the youth
· ensuring that any objects that may cause harm to a youth, his or her family or staff is replaced or repaired in a
  timely manner, and that safety precautions are implemented until the repair is complete (e.g. broken glass)
· repair work by qualified trades people as required
· all safety practices and ensuring the practice of these safety measures and receive training
  on an ongoing basis as required under the Standards or appropriate legislation
· other duties as may be assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Facility Supervisor or Executive Director


WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment demands strong concentration and the ability to focus. Work hours will be, for the
most part, during the normal daily work hours. Occasionally extended hours may be required.. Must be able
to work independently and under stressful conditions. Working environment often requires sensitivity to
cultural and societal differences. Working conditions include physical, emotional and mental demands
along with mild to severe environmental conditions.
